Online Therapy

I offer both online and in-person therapy, depending on availability.

The thought of therapy online can feel intimidating, and you might wonder if it is somehow less effective than face-to-face therapy. But research has shown that online therapy can be just as effective as therapy in person, and that the depth of relating between therapist and client can be similar to that experienced in face-to-face therapy (Treanor, 2017). In fact, some clients have reported that the physical distance can make it easier to discuss more difficult and intimate topics.

If you’re exploring therapy at this time, I want to encourage and reassure you that my approach and practice remain exactly the same, as if we were meeting in person, which is to create a warm, trusting and secure space for therapy to take place. That being said, in preparation for an online session there are some simple things that can be done to help create a natural and seamless connection.

Here are my top 3 tips:

  1. Ensure you have a good wi-fi connection for the call, and enough battery on your device. Or plug it in!

  2. Find a quiet and private space or room for the session to take place, free from distraction. I appreciate this is a challenging time, but a distraction-free session will help it to feel as natural as possible. I too, will make sure I have a quiet, confidential space for the session to take place in.

  3. Position yourself, ideally facing the camera straight-on, so that I can see your whole face rather than the wall, ceiling or half your face (you might want to test this out before the session).

Communicating and connecting online is a learning process for us all! Don’t worry if you don’t get it ‘right’. What’s important is that, if you are struggling in this time, you seek out and receive the help and support that you need.
